Germany (Deutschland), officially known as the Federal Republic of Germany, is a country located in Central and Western Europe. It shares land borders with Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The official language is German. The capital and largest city is Berlin.

The German flag was adopted in May 1949. The design consists of a horizontal tricolour of black, red, and gold.

The sixteen states of Germany

Germany is made up of sixteen states (Länder). Berlin, Bremen & Hamburg are known as city states (Stadtstaaten) while the other thirteen states are area states (Flächenländer) of these Bavaria, Saxony, and Thuringia also describe themselves as Free States (Freistaaten).
