The capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Rio is located in southeastern Brazil, situated between the Atlantic coast and the Serra do Mar mountain range with Guanabara Bay to its east. The municipality has a population of approximately 6.2 million, while the greater metropolitan region exceeds 12 million inhabitants.

Founded by the Portuguese in 1565, Rio de Janeiro served as the capital of Brazil from 1763 to 1960. The city is known for landmarks such as Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana Beach, and the Christ the Redeemer statue.

The flag of Rio de Janeiro, adopted in 1908, features a white field with a blue saltire. At the center is the city’s coat of arms, a red shield with three crossed silver arrows and Phrygian cap, surrounded by two dolphins and a crown. The colors and symbols reflect Portuguese heritage.
