The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK or Britain) in a country in Europe. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, it is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and smaller islands within the British Isles. Its official language is English. The capital and largest city is London.
The red, white and blue flag of the UK known as the Union Flag was adopted in January 1801. The design consists of the red cross of St George with a white edge, superimposed on the saltire of St Patrick edged in white, superimposed over the Scottish Saltire of Saint Andrew.
