Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the western part of the country within the province of North Holland. It sits along the Amstel River and is known for its historic canals and cycling paths and lanes.

Founded in 1275 and following construction of a Dam at the mouth of the Amstel, the name had developed into Aemsterdam by 1327. Attractions include the Rijksmuseum, the state museum; the Van Gogh Museum; Royal Palace of Amsterdam. It is also known for its nightlife, red-light district and cannabis coffee shops.

The flag of Amsterdam, was officially adopted in 1975, being in use before this date. It features three white St. Andrew’s crosses on a black horizontal stripe, bordered by two red bands. The design is based on the city’s coat of arms.
