Flag of the Australian Capital Territory

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is a small inland territory in southeastern Australia, entirely surrounded by New South Wales. It was established in 1911 as the site of the nation’s capital and covers the area around Canberra.

The capital is Canberra, also the national capital of Australia. Known for its planned layout, Canberra features institutions such as Parliament House, the National Gallery of Australia, and the Australian War Memorial. The city is also home to Lake Burley Griffin and the National Carillon, a bell tower gifted by Britain in 1970.

The flag of the ACT, adopted in 1993, features a 1:2 ratio blue and gold vertical bicolour. The hoist side shows the Southern Cross constellation, while the fly side bears Canberra’s coat of arms with a white swan and a black swan representing European and Aboriginal heritage.
