19th September is Jour de Dessalines in Haiti. A public holiday celebrating the birth date of Emperor Jean Jaques Dessalines. Born in 1758 he became the first Emperor of Haiti in October 1804.

The flag of Haiti was adopted in February 1986. The design consists of two equal horizontal bands of blue and red, with the Haiti Coat of Arms featured inside a white box at the center. The coat of arms features weapons representing defence of the county’s freedom and a royal palm, a symbol of independence.
