The Aloha State
Hawaii is a U.S. state located in the Pacific Ocean. The capital and largest city is Honolulu. The flag features a field of eight alternating horizontal stripes of white, red, and blue. In the upper hoist-side corner, there is a blue canton with the Union Jack in the top left corner, representing Hawaii’s historical relationship with the British.

The only U.S. state composed entirely of islands, it covers 10,931 square miles in the central Pacific Ocean. It became the 50th state in 1959 and is the only state with a tropical climate. With volcanic landscapes, coral reefs and beaches, Hawaii is home to Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain on Earth when measured from its base, and Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.
State Anthem/Song: “Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī” (Hawaii’s Own True Sons)
Motto: “Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono” (The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness)
