The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, located about 480 km (300 miles) east of Argentina’s coast. The territory consists of two main islands, East and West Falkland, along with 776 smaller islands. The official language is English. The capital is Stanley, situated on East Falkland.
The Islands have been a British Territory since 1833, but Argentina claims sovereignty over them. In 1982, Argentina briefly occupied the islands before British rule was restored after the Falklands War. In a 2013 referendum, 99.8% of Falklanders voted to remain a UK overseas territory, Argentina continues to dispute their status.
The flag, adopted in 1948 with the design updated in 1999, is a blue ensign with the Union Jack in the upper left corner and the territory’s coat of arms on the right. The emblem features a ram above a ship above the motto “Desire the Right” referring to the ship Desire, believed to have discovered the islands.
