

Gunma is an inland prefecture in the northwestern part of the Kantō region on Honshu. It covers about 6,362 km² making it the 21st largest prefecture in Japan by area.
Gunma is bordered by Niigata and Fukushima to the north, Nagano to the west, Saitama to the south, and Tochigi to the east. This mountainous prefecture is within the Japanese Alps, and includes several active volcanoes such as Mount Asama and Mount Kusatsu-Shirane.
The capital is Maebashi, while the largest city is Takasaki. Other key cities include Ōta, Isesaki, and Shibukawa. Gunma’s population is around 1.9 million. It is known for its many hot spring resorts including the Kusatsu Onsen.
The flag of Gunma was adopted on November 28, 1964. It features a white stylized design of three mountain peaks surrounding the Kanji character ‘群’ Gun of Gunma on a purple background. The emblem represents Mount Akagi, Haruna, and Myōgi.
