Tokyo Metropolis is the capital and largest city of Japan, located on the eastern coast of Honshu. Landmarks include the Tokyo Skytree, the tallest structure in Japan, the Imperial Palace and Shibuya Scramble Pedestrian Crossing.

The city has a population of approximately 14 million, while the Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo and parts of six neighboring prefectures, is home to over 37 million people, making it the most populous metropolitan region in the world.

The official flag of Tokyo, adopted in 1964, features a white Metropolitan Crest (monshō) on an Edo purple field. The six-rayed crest represents the sun with a central dot symbolizing Tokyo as the heart of Japan. Its design was created by Hiromoto Watanabe.

Tokyo also uses a symbol flag (shinboru) adopted in 1989, featuring a green ginkgo leaf on a white background. The ginkgo represents growth, prosperity and Tokyo’s reputation as an eco-conscious city. The leaf’s stylized shape also resembles the letter “T” for Tokyo.
