Bandeira dos Açores

The Azores are an autonomous territory of Portugal. It consists of nine volcanic islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean. The official language is Portuguese, and the capital cities are Ponta Delgada (executive), Angra do Heroísmo (judicial) and Horta (legislative). The islands are São Miguel, São Jorge, Terceira, Santa Maria, Graciosa, Faial, Pico, Flores, and Corvo.

The flag was adopted in 1979. It features a 40% blue and 60% white vertical bicolor design, with a golden goshawk (açor in Portuguese, from which the islands’ name is derived). Above this are nine stars arranged in a semi-circle, representing the nine islands of the archipelago. In the upper left corner, the flag also includes the Portuguese national shield, signifying the Azores’ status as a part of Portugal.
