Tasmania is an island state of Australia located 240 km (150 mi) south of the mainland, across the Bass Strait. It includes the main island of Tasmania and over 1,000 smaller surrounding islands.
The capital is Hobart, situated at the foot of Mount Wellington and along the estuary of the River Derwent. Hobart is known for its colonial architecture, Salamanca Market, and its national parks and reserves.
The flag of Tasmania, adopted in 1876, is a British Blue Ensign defaced with the state badge—a red lion passant on a white disc assumed to symbolize its British heritage.
