Prince Edward Island (PEI) is Canada’s smallest province in both area and population. Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, it is connected to the mainland by the 12.9-kilometre Confederation Bridge. Known for its farmland, and coastal beauty, PEI is famous as the setting of Anne of Green Gables.
The capital is Charlottetown, often called the “Birthplace of Confederation” for hosting the 1864 Charlottetown Conference. The city has a charming waterfront, historic sites like Province House, and a thriving arts scene.
The province’s population has strong Scottish, Irish, and Acadian roots. Agriculture—especially potato farming—is a key part of the economy, along with fishing and tourism. PEI is also known for festivals, lighthouses, and scenic drives like the Points East Coastal Drive.
The flag of Prince Edward Island was adopted in 1964. It features the English heraldic lion on a red and white striped border, surrounding a large oak tree beside three smaller saplings, symbolizing England and the island’s three counties.
