Christmas Island is an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, located south of Java, and Sumatra in Indonesia. The official language is English. The capital is Flying Fish Cove also known as “The Settlement”.

The flag, in use since April 26, 1986 was officially adopted on 26 January 2002. It is a green and blue diagonal background, representing the island’s land and surrounding ocean, with a green outline of the island within a golden circle at the center. A white Southern Cross constellation is featured in the blue half and a golden bosun bird on the green half.
