

Yamanashi is an inland prefecture located in the Chūbu region of central Honshu. It covers approximately 4,465 km² , making it Japan’s 32nd largest prefecture by area.
Yamanashi is bordered by Nagano to the northwest, Shizuoka to the south, Kanagawa to the southeast, Saitama to the northeast and Tokyo to the east. The prefecture is surrounded by mountains including the Southern Alps and the Yatsugatake range.
The capital is Kōfu, situated in a basin area surrounded by peaks. The prefecture’s population is around 800,000. Tourism centers around Mount Fuji, the Fuji Five Lakes region, and hot spring resorts such as Isawa and Yamanaka.
The flag of Yamanashi was adopted on December 1, 1966. It features a stylized yellow Kanji character of ‘Yama’ inside a white representation of Mt. Fuji. The prefecture is a leading producer of wine and the purple background represents grapes.
