South Australia is located in southern central Australia. It shares borders with all mainland states: Western Australia to the west, Northern Territory to the north, Queensland to the northeast, New South Wales to the east, and Victoria to the southeast. The Great Australian Bight forms its southern coastline.
The capital is Adelaide, a city known for its grid layout and festivals held in its parklands. Landmarks include the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide Botanic Garden, South Australian Museum and Art Gallery of South Australia.
The flag, adopted in 1904, is a British Blue Ensign defaced with the state badge on the fly: a gold disc featuring a piping shrike (Australian magpie) with wings outstretched.
