Tottori Prefecture is located along the Sea of Japan coast in the Chugoku region of western Honshu. It is Japan’s least populous prefecture, with a land area of about 3,507 km²
Tottori is bordered by Shimane Prefecture to the west, Okayama Prefecture to the south, Hyōgo Prefecture to the east, and faces the Sea of Japan to the north. With a long northern coastline, much of its inland territory is mountainous.
The capital is Tottori City, located near the famous Tottori Sand Dunes, which are the largest dune system in Japan. Its other cities are Kurayoshi, Sakaiminato and Yonago. The region’s natural features and slower pace make it distinct from Japan’s more densely populated prefectures.
The flag of Tottori was adopted on 23 October 1968. As Tottori’s name means “bird”, it features a white stylized Hiragana character of To (と) of Tottori in a bird shape on a dark blue field.
