The Pitcairn Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the South Pacific Ocean, located about 5,300 km (3,300 miles) northeast of New Zealand. The territory consists of four volcanic islands, Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno, but only Pitcairn Island is inhabited. The official language is English. The capital is Adamstown.
The population is descended from the mutineers of HMS Bounty and their Tahitian companions. As of 2023, there were 35 permanent inhabitants.
The flag of the Pitcairn Islands, adopted in 1984 is a blue ensign with the Union Jack in the upper left corner and the territory’s coat of arms on the right. The emblem features a shield with an anchor and a Bible, representing the Bounty’s history, and is topped by a helmet and a green Pitcairn Island wheelbarrow symbolizing settlement and survival.
