The Northwest Territories is located in northern Canada, bordered by Yukon, Nunavut, British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. It includes part of the Arctic Archipelago and the Mackenzie River, Canada’s longest river.

The capital is Yellowknife, known for its diamond mining industry, it is the territory’s only city. In March it hosts the month-long Snowking Winter Festival, featuring a giant snow castle, live music, and art events, on the frozen Great Slave Lake.

Around half of the population are Indigenous, including Dene, Métis, and Inuvialuit peoples. Traditional knowledge and languages remain strong in the region. The territory experiences long, cold winters and midnight sun in summer, and is a top destination to witness the aurora borealis.

The Northwest Territories flag, adopted in 1969, features a blue–white–blue vertical tricolour. The territorial shield in the centre has green and white and red elements to represent forests, tundra and the Arctic Circle. Gold bars and a fox symbolise mineral wealth and the fur trade.
