Nunavut, Canada’s newest and largest territory, was officially separated from the Northwest Territories in 1999. It spans most of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and is bordered by Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, and Hudson Bay.

The capital is Iqaluit, located on Baffin Island. Its name means ‘place of many fish’ in Inuktitut. Known for Inuit art, traditional practices, and hosting community events like Toonik Tyme festival, in 2022 Pope Francis visited Iqaluit to become the first Pope to visit Nunavut.

Nunavut has a population of over 40,000, the majority of whom are Inuit. Inuktitut is widely spoken alongside English and French. Wildlife, icebergs, and the northern lights attract adventurous visitors to this unique Arctic region.

The flag was adopted in 1999. It features a red inuksuk, a traditional Inuit stone marker, on a gold and white background symbolising the land and snow. A blue star in the upper fly represents Niqirtsuituq the North Star and leadership of elders.
