The Cook Islands is a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand, located in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Zealand and between French Polynesia and American Samoa. The official languages are English and Cook Islands Māori, and the capital is Avarua on the island of Rarotonga.

The flag adopted on August 4, 1979, features a blue field symbolizing the Pacific Ocean. In the upper left corner is the Union Jack, representing the Cook Islands’ historical ties to the United Kingdom. To the right, 15 white stars are arranged in a circle, representing the 15 islands that make up the Cook Islands.
