Flag of Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located on the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. The Rock of Gibraltar dominates the landscape, with a densely populated town at its base, home to over 34,000 people. The official language is English.

The flag was adopted in 1982 consists of two horizontal bands of white and red. Centered in the white band is a red, three-towered castle with a gold key hanging from the castle’s central tower. The castle symbolizes Gibraltar’s status as a fortress, and the key represents its strategic position as the “key” to the Mediterranean Sea. The flag differs from other British overseas territories in that it does not feature the Union Jack.
