The Association of Southeast Asian Nations was founded on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with five original members: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. It aims to promote political / economic cooperation and regional stability among Southeast Asian nations.
What is the purpose of ASEAN?
It is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising ten member states from Southeast Asia. ASEAN’s primary objective is to accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in the region through joint efforts and to promote regional peace and stability through respect for justice and the rule of law.

What are the 10 member countries?
Papua New Guinea (since 1976)) and Timor-Leste (since 2002) hold observer status and are in the process of full membership accession.
The flag of ASEAN was adopted in 1997. It features a blue background symbolizing peace and stability, with a red circle representing courage and dynamism. At its center, a bundle of ten yellow rice stalks symbolizes the unity and friendship of the ten member nations.
