All about the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Montréal is the largest city in the province of Quebec, Canada, located on the Island of Montreal in the Saint Lawrence River, in the southeastern part of the country. Originally founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie (City of Mary) it now takes its name from the city’s triple-peaked mountain Mount Royal.

French is Montréal’s official language, with 85.7% of city residents fluent in it as of 2021. The city is highly bilingual, with 58.5% of the population speaking both French and English. The city is host to the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix; the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the largest jazz festival in the world; and the Just for Laughs festival, the largest comedy festival in the world

The flag of Montréal, originally officially adopted on May 13, 1939 features a white field with a red cross. Around the cross, a fleur-de-lys, red rose, a green shamrock, and purple thistle, represent the French, English, Irish, and Scottish settlers that shaped the city. The flag was updated in 2017 to add a white pine symbol at the center, recognizing the Indigenous peoples of the region.
